Tres meses después de su primera presentación llegaron al maquillaje.

Su primera presentación fue en el Club Popcorn de Nueva York, el30 de enero de 1973. Ese día los miembros de la banda tuvieron tan sólo a 3 espectadores pero fue tres meses después cuando la banda decidió incorporar lo que sería su marca, el maquillaje en el rostro.

La banda programó dos shows en el Club Daysi de Amityville de Nueva York el 9 y 10 de ese año y decidió hacer algo distinto. Los músicos decidieron pintarse los rostros como una forma de dejar su imagen habitual y transformarse en tarima. Una forma de impactar al público y diferenciarse del resto de artistas de la época. Esto hizo que sus integrantes crearan sus alteregos: Paul Stanleycomo Starchild, Gene Simmons sería Demon, Ace Frehley se llamaría Space Ace y Peter Crisscomo Catman.
